The Western Development Drive
Under the guidance of western development strategy, Chongqing accelerates the pace of development. Chongqing is aim to be “an economic development engine” in the country's western region, an economic center in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
Municipality
On June18, 1997: Chongqing was approved to be a municipality directly under the Central Government to make efforts to become a leading economic force in the country's underdeveloped western region.
On June18, 2007: the 10th anniversary of Chongqing Municipality. Since the approval of the central government to municipalities, Chongqing's economic and social development has made tremendous achievements: GDP is definitely increasing every year; A strong traffic network is building; more overseas investment enterprises are coming. Chongqing now has a brand new strategy for regional development; the "One-hour Economic Circle" and the Two Wings, Northeast Chongqing and Southeast Chongqing.
Asia Pacific Cities Summit (APCS)
The 5th Asia Pacific Cities Summit was held in Chongqing from October 11 to October 14, 2005, which has further enhanced the image of Chongqing opening to the outside world. A total of 869 representatives from 123 cities across 41 countries attended the summit.
New Special Zone
On June 7, 2007, Chongqing Municipality has been approved by the Chinese State Council to be the only provincial-level piloting area in China for Comprehensive Reform for Coordinated and Balanced Urban-rural Development. Chongqing takes reform as the means to dismantle the institutional obstacles in order to realize the Coordinated and Balanced Urban-rural Development, the means to accumulate successful developmental experiences in deepening nation-wide reform, realizing scientific development and harmonious development and the way to serve as both a success model and a developmental leader.
